Known as the Eden of the southern coast of South Africa, Wilderness is set between the Kaaimans River and the Goukama Nature Reserve, at the foot of the Outeniqua Mountains. Renowned for its tranquil sea and beaches, Wilderness is also surrounded by many rivers and natural lakes and lagoons, making it a great destination for water-sports.
Wilderness is home to many types of wildlife, in particular birds, making it ideal for bird-watchers. Other local activities include dolphin and whale-watching, hang-gliding, paragliding, horse-riding, mountain-biking, hiking, scenic drives, angling, boating and other water-sports.
The small village also has a newly built shopping area designed around the existing milkwood forest. This provides restaurants, shops and a lively Friday night craft market. Up the hill, the famous Map of Africa viewpoint offers fantastic views of the Kaaimans River Valley and a virtually unrivalled ocean vista.

From Cape Town International Airport:
- Follow the N2 to Wilderness, following signs for George (480 km)
- Pass by George on the N2.
- Pass through the small village of Wilderness on the N2.
- Look out for Caltex petrol/gas station on your right; 1 km beyond Caltex, turn left into North Street.
- Turn immediately right at the T-junction to continue on North Street.
- The Lodge on the Lake is No. 746 North Street.
